Olfactive opened its 25,00 sq. ft., state-of-the-art production facility in Charlottetown, PEI, in 2001 and has recently expanded to 35,000 sq. ft. When planning the location of our facility, Prince Edward Island offered the best environment to build Olfactive' manufacturing facility for a wide variety of reasons that may not be well known. Recent KPMG data showed that the cost of doing business on PEI is among the lowest in Canada. PEI offered the best economic advantages than any other province. It has the lowest tax environment, a low-cost, highly skilled labour pool, strong institutional research facilities and an extremely supportive Provincial Government.

PEI is aggressively investing in establishing and growing a "bio-cluster" as a means to attract other science-based companies. PEI is well positioned due to its research university and the National Research Council research facility. Olfactive is well positioned to participate in the growth of this bio-cluster.

Quality control, an extremely expensive aspect of the business, is one of Olfactive' top priorities. Because of this, the facility was designed based on pharmaceutical standards. Having been constructed based on Olfactive' specific needs, our facility also allows our partners to further benefit from incredible manufacturing efficiency and low overhead costs. We have been licenced audited by Health Canada, allowing for the production of OTC pharmaceuticals.

Olfactive' PEI facility has unlimited expansion capabilities. Again, the building was designed with future growth in mind so both the manufacturing space and warehouse space involve walls that can be easily moved without any disruption to day-to-day processes. To facilitate the expansion, a modular building type was chosen. As a result, even though initial costs were a little higher, the costs to expand are far less than they would have been had another type of building been selected.

The equipment in the facility has all been carefully chosen with both efficiency and quality control in mind. It is the founders' belief that if you put enough thought into the equipment you use, the processes themselves become much more manageable and standardized. An example is the blending apparatus. Olfactive chose to use fully enclosed vessels to prevent any contamination while creating the ability to move the product to any location. In addition, special sensors were added to one of the vessels and blend uniformity was quantified using brand new technology and a concept called "effusivity."
